Hermes Also Makes Foosball Tables
HERMES DOES FOOSBALL Background I love foosball. Who doesn’t? I thought I was pretty good until one fateful night at a bar in Tallahassee in 2000. A regular straight up destroyed my friend and I. I had no idea people could be that good at this throwaway game. Ball control, speed, controlled random rotation- you name it. He could juggle the ball in the air between his lines of players. I may have scored one lucky goal, I don’t really remember, but what I do remember is my disbelief in a human being’s skill at this game. It clearly left a mark on me. Tell me about THIS table… …

Another day, another Celebrity watch from Phillips/Bacs & Russo
I don’t know where Bacs & Russo keep digging up these gems, but they are truly the best in the business at the moment. The Paul Newman Paul Newman Daytona, the White Gold 6265 Daytona and now this Steve McQueen Submariner 5513. Currently owned by former stuntman Loren Janes’ family, McQueen gifted the watch to him after years of him serving as his stuntman in…wait for it…19 films. Janes’ home burned down in 2016 but they dug this watch out of the rubble. The story made its way to Rolex and they took care of restoring it. All of this is clearly documented by Rolex and seems on the up and…

Hublot and Shepard Fairey collaborate on Big Bang Meca-10
Hublot has been doing some great stuff in the last 12 months. Look at the Usain Bolt, the Red Magic, and now this reference: The Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey I’ve been a fan of Shepard’s since 1997 when I saw a documentary about him on someone’s dirty old vhs tape that was full of other pre internet virality. Is virality a word? Yes, it is now. His fame stems from making stickers from a picture of Andre the Giant he started putting up around Rhode Island in the early 1990s. Now you can see Andre stickers and wheat-pastes everywhere. I wrote an actual letter to Shepard back in 1998. …

Elvis’ Omega Sold for $1.8 MILLION
That tatty old diamond-studded Omega H6582 signed and retailed by Tiffany sold for $1.8 million (CHF 1,812,500) in a Phillips auction earlier this month. The engraving is cool, the story is second to none, (well maybe the PNPND story). Phillips auction site here.

Phillips to Auction Elvis Presley’s watch
Caught in a Trap I visited Elvis’ Memphis home Graceland in the Summer of 1995. On that trip I was driving from Florida up to Tennessee for some natural wonders sightseeing and more importantly… the completely unnatural hot mess that Elvis lived in. I say that lovingly. I was so blown away my the house and the whole industry that surrounded Elvis Presley Enterprises in the immediate area. I’m not sure it exists elsewhere. I even visited again with my wife about 5 years ago. I’ll take my kids when they are old enough to appreciate schlock and kitsch and Elvis in general. Maybe the will find a trove of…

2018 Watch Predictions
2018 Expectations Every year I put together a list of watches I’d like to see. Being the tastemaker I am, these are the watches you want to see. I am nothing if not of the people. Many manufacturers blow it year after year, so I do this post to help them realize the err of their ways and help them plan the next year’s production roadmap. Swatch Tourbillon At Baselworld 2013, Swatch announced the Sistem51. They broke new ground with the 51 part automatic movement with a 40 hour power reserve. The next logistical horological innovation out of the Swiss Superman should be a tourbillon you can lose and not…

Two New Floyd Mayweather Hublot Big Bang Unicos
Floyd Mayweather is a now-retired boxer with a 50-0 record. He was driven out of retirement by Irish MMA champion Conor McGregor after an almost two year absense in summer 2017 for probably the most watched boxing match of all time. Mayweather pocketed over $100 Million and according to certain sources, possibly even double that. The point here being the guy is big business. So, of course, he’s into watches and has some signature pieces with his name all over them. These two new models Big Bang Unico references from Hublot feature his TMT logo (The Money Team.) BIG BANG UNICO TMT CARBON GOLD Reference 411.QX.1180.PR.TMT18 Diameter 45mm Thickness…

Homage to Walter Lange in Stainless Steel
Watch brand extraordinaire A. Lange & Söhne showed off a 1 of 1 stainless steel Homage to Walter Lange at this year’s SIHH. The watch will be auctioned off in Geneva by Phillips in May. The watch features a stoppable sweep seconds hand and a black enamel dial in a stainless steel case. The center seconds is a jumping hand and a wonderful counterpoint to the sweeping sub-seconds hand. The caliber called L1924, an homage to Lange’s birth year. Other references will be produced in precious metals; yellow, white, and pink gold. Why did I write about this? Three things: Black enamel dial, what what!!! My son is named Walter. …
