Paul Newman’s Legendary ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex PAUL NEWMAN ROLEX

People lose their minds over two things, Paul Newman Daytonas and Celebrity Watches.  Join me to watch the collective watch community’s head explode when Phillips auctions off Paul Newman’s actual Daytona.

ABOUT

You can read the story on the link to Phillips below as to how this whole thing came to be.  TL:DR version… Newman handed it to his daughter’s boyfriend in the early 1980s.

What is it exactly?

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6239 with an exotic dial purchased by Newman’s wife, Joanne, at Tiffany & Co. in 1968.

MONEY

The watch was something like $250 USD new back when you’d see them in stores.  A new (in 2017) Rolex Daytona retails for approximately $12,500.  In the last year Newman Daytonas have skyrocketed from $60-70K to upwards of $150,000.  That’s a lot of money for a watch that isn’t relatively rare.  The estimate on the Phillips site is a cool million.  It’ll go for more, I say between 5-6 million.  But who knows, the sky is the limit for something like this.  A LOT of bragging rights come along with it, you just have to have a large piggy bank to win them.

The Engraving

Paul Newman was a racer.  His wife, naturally, cared about him.  When she picked this up she had it engraved DRIVE CAREFULLY ME.  Genius.

About the usage of the word Legendary

Ok, I’ll say this is actually legendary.  That work is completely meaningless at this point.  But this watch, how people have wondered for decades where it was, yes I’ll admit is legendary.  Newman wore it racing, acting, bow-hunting, word processing and to acquaintances’ weddings.

About Bundt straps.

They’re horrible.  No. Just no.
